FREEWRITE: Lost to-
Thunder claps and groans:
Drives me -in a frenzy-
to the balcony
A deluge of rain
splashing
along the mosaic banister
I arrange crates
coffee
pillows
the tiny glass table
I have grown to love
Light cheap incense
Like a ritual
So it mixes with the wetness
of everything:
damp books
too warm air
the flooded ant mounds
wood rot.
The God of Rain
and everything
says, cmon now girl:
write
write
write.
But by the time I get the window open
the birds start again
Sudden heat -from the east-
radiating across my thighs
No more staccato songs
No more secret soul chants
No sacred drum dance
No more, no more, no more
Those dark clouds
That isolated moment
Shift -away from me
Lost to preparation
Like my children’s childhoods
Like this unwritten poem
Like the joy of living
And not dying
not dying
not dying.
DAILY WRITING PROMPT:
Have you ever had the sudden inspiration to write, but then spent so much time preparing for it that that moment was lost? Freewrite for 10 minutes, right now, about that experience.
Do you mourn the loss? Were you happy to avoid the challenge of writing? Did you put it off intentionally, subconsciously maybe? Share your work in the comments!
ah damn it, i can’t decipher the meaning.
This is a tough one. But poetry is really about what it means to the reader and less what it means to the poet. We spend a lot of time trying to figure out what the poet meant, and that’s good, and writers always appreciate when someone truly “gets” them. But the writers know, it’s not always about them… it’s about what their moments of reflection stir up in someone else, what feeling the language leaves them with.
So read poetry carefully, line by line, then stanza by stanza… so that YOU can reflect and say what it means for you.
I discussed this one later with Br Shaheed. He took a different meaning / feeling from the ending than I was feeling when I wrote it. But that’s ok. That’s the beauty of poetry… it’s not just open to interpretation. It’s designed for it. 😉
Oh yeah, and LANGUAGE!!! O_o Ahem!!! 😀
hol up, you figured out who i am?
Girl, yes. LOL.
